when the world stood still

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 12:54 AM
haha both my phone and my com are officially dead (com died this morning, phone at night)

and i am using my dad's old laptop which can't do much and my mum's phone which can't do much either.

slept the whole day away cos i was so sian, and i went out for dinner with my family. walked along orchard road for like 3 hours, saw the pretty lights and they sealed off part of orchard road haha so cool there were these old folks doing mass dance lol. took some blur photos with the lousy camera that didn't die, will upload when i get my com fixed sigh.

this com is lagging big time, which just means... uni apps are even more ominous than they are.

christmas is over, and i still can't figure out if today or the 24th christmas eve is called boxing day. =\ why boxing day anyway meh.

and there was this filipino lady singing along orchard road busking, and omg her voice is so good i thought they were playing from a cd at first. O_O

it comes and it goes

after a flurry of merry christmas-es, life returns to normal, just exactly like it was 1159. my house is quiet just like any other day.

and just when i thought the problem had been solved, the nvlddmkm.sys error pops back up onto me saying merry christmas too. oh well.

at least its less frequent, but i hope it goes off soon because i assumed flopping around in safe mode and updating the drivers would have solved it. =\

and i disabled uac to boot (HACKERS AND SPYWARE ARE YOU READING THIS) sigh can the com show me some love. =\

no more gaming from now on? =(

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 12:26 PM
its not cos my parents have grounded me, although they have explicitly stated that i should exercise more esp when january comes around...

it seems that my geforce 8400m is burning out, i can use my computer just fine, just that when i load videos or start games like dragonage i get this blue overlay over the whole screen which subsequently hangs. went to google and found that geforce 840 cards are doomed to fail, and that gaming on a laptop is ultimately not that good an idea since the m cards are even worse than the desktop cards. sigh. this is so depressing.

no gaming! D= even warcraft crashes on me now, so i think not even dota. =\ maybe its the card overheating and all that like what the article said, but i don't think i've been overclocking it? (unless forcing it to run DAO is considered as such =\)

sigh.

IT'S A SIGN. To. Finish. Up. My. Uni. Apps. Instead. Of. Gaming.

[edit: its getting worse. prolonged attempts to fix it have resulted in deterioration of its condition. i really suspect its overheating because if i leave the com on for a while it automatically just restarts, so i can't use it for more than 20 minutes at a go (estimate) - this is really bad...]

Please be patient and wait 10 years

Sunday Journals 2009 w51

---------------

So I shall try to make a post every Sunday night, to wrap up events of the week.. I have said for years that I want to focus, but I have not done so. I should really start. On another note its quite interesting how God seems to work, this is not the first time I have thought "Oh I hope so-and-so would come to know God", and the next moment that very person comes and asks you about Christianity. Cousin's wedding on Friday. How nice it is, for marriage to be a way for both parties to come to know God together. Patience.
i need swimming lessons, so i'm wondering else if anyone else on my flist has a similar need.

swimming is actually quite fun, as i found out while splashing in the pool today, if you actually know how to swim. oh woe. i need to learn it before NS because i totally want to book out on weekends =\

i was just...

The Cambridge study experience

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 12:36 AM
I am starting to see why the medical course at Cambridge is ranked as it is...

Either it is just me, or we seem to be learning everything, at least for anatomy. They tell you what is important and what is supposedly tested, but sometimes there do ask those seemingly obscure stuff. Well stuff that you thought was obscure but actually isn't.

Essays let you learn a lot. I never thought it to be possible to write an essay on anatomy, how would you fill pages and pages on something like.... the orbit? (the eye socket). And my essay turned out to be 6.5 pages long. Minus the diagrams it's about 3 pages of text.

The main point isn't how much information you can cram into your essay, it's how well you understand your topic. When you actually understand, tonnes of information become a matter-of-fact thing, the complex becomes simple, and you start to be able to see things from different perspectives. From there you gain additional knowledge, seeing how different systems fit together to form a big issue picture. It's really true when people say you can't learn everything from textbooks. I am complaining about my textbooks. I really wonder why didn't they include those bits of info in.

This reminds me of some diagram we were shown in our last "lecture". The learning process is like this pyramid. At the bottom you have data, you then move up to information, then knowledge, then wisdom. It is very easy to obtain data, rather easy to process data into information, it then gets harder to consolidate information into knowledge and finally translate knowledge into wisdom.

I'm finally done with my first (out of 3) piece of holiday essays, for one (out of 3) subjects. Jiayous!!

dramatic turn of events

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 12:33 AM
ok i probably expected this sort of...

that kind of shifts the relative importance of certain things, but its probably not prudent to talk about it here. in fact, its too complicated to even know where to begin.

let's just say i have to readjust all my expectations at this late hour, and it isn't that easy. hmm.
